Student Hall of Fame: Eugene C.

Updated: Jan 21, 2022

When Eugene first started Kung Fu, she was very shy. She didn't make any sound at first and was incredibly 'gentle' with her strikes. It has been a great pleasure of mine to teach this youngster and watch her grow into the confident Kung Fu warrior she is today! During her journey as a Tiger, she has competed in tournaments, increased her striking power to break boards, and has become one of the loudest students in class. Usually the age requirement for our Junior (Dragon) class is at least 6 years old, but with her hard work, bravery, and dedication, I felt she was ready to take the next step in her training and she could 'hang' with the older kids. After about a year of hard work and dedication, I am proud to introduce the third TIGER inductee into our Student Hall of Fame... Eugene C.!

At age 5, she has attained all FIVE TIGER Achievement Patches (Split Club, Power Kick, 1st Weapon, Academic, Strong Stance). You can read more about them here.

Below are a few words from Eugene regarding her training and motivation!

Name: Eugene C.

Age: 5

Q. How long have you been practicing Kung Fu?

It's been a little over 14 months now .

Q. Do you do any other physical activities besides Kung Fu? If yes, how has Kung Fu helped you?

I love to swim and dive. Since I started practicing Kung Fu, I've become more confident and less afraid of deep water.

Q. Why did you start practicing Kung Fu?

A. I was walking with my dad to get some candy when I stopped in front of the Academy, to watch other students practicing. Until then I didn't know Kung Fu and had not thought of starting it, of course. But it looked like a lot of fun and I watched them for a few minutes. Then Sifu Luke came out to greet us and suggested some trial classes. After doing just one trial class, I decided to start Kung Fu.

Q. What has been the most significant benefit or change since you’ve been practicing Kung Fu?

A. Mom says I eat better and sleep better since I've been practicing Kung Fu. Dad says I got stronger and speak in a louder voice.

Q. What is your favorite thing about practicing Kung Fu?

A. Speaking of everyday training, I like the obstacle course training the most. Overall, I loved the Tat Wong Kung Fu championship tournament(where I got a silver medal) the most.

Q. What is your least favorite thing about Kung Fu?

A. My belt becoming loose and falling off.

Q. What advice would you give someone who is hesitant to try start Kung Fu?

A. It is a lot of fun and you can get stronger!

Q. What is your most sought after Kung Fu goal?

A. Becoming a black belt student.

Q. What do you enjoy doing outside of Kung Fu?

A. I love swimming, reading, writing letters and playing the piano.

Q. Any advice you would give your younger self about practicing Kung Fu?

 A. Never miss any special seminar and don't whine about having to practice!
