Congratulations to our newest black belts who endured a grueling six-hour examination conducted by Grand Master Tat-Mau Wong and Master Jeff Chow on Saturday, November 3. The examination included a comprehensive review of all their Kung Fu techniques and knowledge. Students were led through weapon sets, hand forms, rapid Choy Lay Fut combinations, self-defense, and they ended the test with challenging endurance exercises and board-breaking.
Each class of black belts means something different to me. I sent only three candidates to this test, Justin, Leslie, and Nikita, and each one has a story of their journey that is special to me.
Nikita started his Kung Fu training with two of his friends five years ago. Out of all of them, he is the only one who achieved his black belt. Nikita spent every summer overseas visiting relatives and during the school year he played basketball. Though his time was limited, he still practiced on his own and gave his best effort every time he came to class.
This test was Leslie's third attempt at testing for her 3rd degree. In that time span, she had broken a rib (not during Kung Fu training), moved, and added to her family. You can always find her rushing to class before work in the morning to train and immediately afterwards to her practice. Through it all, she has a smile on her face, a living example of dedication and the Kung Fu spirit.
I've taught Justin since he was 5 years old! He just started his first year in college and we've had our share of challenges along the way. However, it is good to see him focus on something he enjoys and excel at it too. It has been my pleasure to watch him grow and mature into the young man he is today.
Lastly, thank you to the families for continually trusting our academy with your youth and for letting us be part of their evolution as martial artists and young adults!
